What's the real meaning behind 'Maroon' by Taylor Swift? Here's What I think

Updated: Mar 7, 2023

Track Two on 'Midnights' is a heartwrenching song about lost love and looking back on what it once was. Taylor Swift has already confirmed that each song on this album is about her own life, which leads to questions(...?). Who could 'Maroon' possibly be about?

One speculation is Harry Styles himself. Swift and Styles started dating in 2012, which is the same year her 'Red' album came out. There are already many songs people believe Swift wrote for Styles, the most popular being 'Style' itself. If you want a list of songs they wrote for each other, I compiled a playlist on Spotify with 37 songs. The songs range from 'Welcome to New York' to 'Come Back, Be Here.' Their relationship is complicated, but I'm happy to go in more detail in another post.

In 'Out Of the Woods,' Swift sings:

"Looking at it now

It all seems so simple

We were lying on your couch

I remember

...

The rest of the world was black and white

But we were in screaming color

...

We were built to fall apart

Then fall back together

...

The night we couldn't quite forget

When we decided, we decided

To move the furniture so we could dance

Baby, like we stood a chance"

Already, these lyrics add meaning to 'Maroon' which was the color of their love—think "we were in screaming color" in 'Out of the Woods.'

She sings in 'Maroon' that "When the morning came

This is quite possibly the morning after 'the night we couldn't quite forget' when they were 'lying on the couch' with 'my feet in your lap.'

Additionally, in 'Maroon', Swift sings

Could she be refering to dancing in the living room??

She also sang "You were standing hollow-eyed in the hallway" which could be a reference to Style's 'Meet Me In The Hallway.'

Her chorus is maybe the most pointed towards Styles, by saying

"Looked up at the sky and it was (Maroon)

Her wine-stained t-shirt could be a reference to 'Clean' when she sings "You're still all over me /

Like a wine-stained dress I can't wear anymore" And Swift sings about a long-distance relationship that failed, which is exactly what happens with Styles as he tours in New Zealand and cheats on her. Apart from that, she often wore red, or maroon, while dating Styles. One example is their popular paprazzi photos confirming their relationship, when she's wearing a maroon coat.

What do you think? Could 'Maroon' possibly be written about Harry Styles? Is there someone else?
